1. About OpenRLens
OpenRLens (“we”, “us”, “our”) is an independent research intelligence platform that provides signals on institutional research quality derived from open scholarly APIs. By accessing or using OpenRLens at openrlens.com, you agree to these Terms of Service.
OpenRLens is a software platform providing access to research analytics tools. It does not provide consulting, advisory, or professional services of any kind.
2. Who Can Use OpenRLens
OpenRLens is available to anyone worldwide. You must be at least 16 years old to create an account. By registering, you confirm that the information you provide is accurate.
3. Plans and Pricing
Student — $5 / month
Includes a 7-day free trial (no credit card required). Covers Discover (institution search & map), full research signal analysis (Analyse), side-by-side institution comparison (Compare), and basic researcher profile lookup. Does not include Institution Intelligence deep-dives or journal/conference quality ratings.
Faculty / Researcher — $10 / month
Includes a 7-day free trial (no credit card required) with 5 deep-dive analyses included during the trial. Everything in the Student plan, plus: journal quality signals (Q1–Q4, ABDC, CORE), conference quality ratings (CORE A*/A/B/C), researcher publication benchmarking, and Institution Intelligence deep-dive analyses (20 analyses per month) with PDF report downloads.
Consultants — $99 / month
No free trial — payment required to start. Everything in the Faculty plan, plus: peer benchmarking across institutions globally, research readiness matrix & portfolio prioritisation, signal tracking & automated improvement workflows, and automated signal-gap action reports. Includes 100 deep-dive analyses and 100 PDF downloads per month.
Prices are in US Dollars (USD). Billing is handled by LemonSqueezy, who acts as the merchant of record. Subscriptions renew automatically each month until cancelled.
4. Cancellation
You may cancel your paid subscription at any time from your account settings. On cancellation, you retain access to paid features until the end of your current billing period. No further charges will be made after cancellation.
5. Acceptable Use
The following are strictly prohibited:
- NOT ALLOWEDUse OpenRLens to produce misleading or fraudulent academic assessments
- NOT ALLOWEDScrape, crawl, or systematically extract data from the platform by automated means
- NOT ALLOWEDReverse-engineer, decompile, or attempt to derive the source code or methodology of OpenRLens
- NOT ALLOWEDCopy or replicate the platform’s UI, scoring system, or metric framework to build a competing service
- NOT ALLOWEDShare your account credentials with others
- NOT ALLOWEDUse the platform in any way that violates applicable law
6. Data and Privacy
All research signals are derived from publicly available open scholarly APIs (OpenAlex, Crossref, Europe PMC, CORE, OpenAIRE, NIH RePORTER, UKRI, NSF). We do not store personal academic data. For analytics, IP addresses are one-way hashed and never stored in raw form. See our privacy section on the About page for full details.
7. Intellectual Property
The OpenRLens platform — including its source code, scoring methodology, metric definitions, algorithms, user interface, visual design, and all associated content — is the exclusive intellectual property of its creator and is protected by copyright law. All rights reserved.
You may not copy, reproduce, modify, distribute, create derivative works from, or reverse-engineer any part of the OpenRLens platform or its outputs without prior written permission.
Underlying academic metadata belongs to the respective open data providers (OpenAlex, Crossref, Europe PMC, CORE, and others). NIRF rankings data is © Ministry of Education, Government of India.
You may use results and outputs from OpenRLens for personal, academic, or internal business purposes (e.g. citing a metric in a report or presentation). You may not resell, republish, or redistribute OpenRLens outputs as a standalone data product or service.
8. Disclaimer of Warranties
OpenRLens is provided “as is”. Signals are derived from open metadata which may be incomplete or contain errors. Results should be used as one input among many in academic decision-making — not as the sole basis for admissions, employment, or funding decisions. We make no warranties as to accuracy, completeness, or fitness for a particular purpose.
9. Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, OpenRLens and its creators shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the platform. Our total liability for any claim shall not exceed the amount you paid us in the 3 months preceding the claim.
10. Changes to These Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. Material changes will be notified by email (for paid users) or via a notice on the platform. Continued use after changes constitutes acceptance.
11. Governing Law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the European Union. Any disputes shall be resolved in accordance with applicable EU consumer protection regulations.
